Smile at the Sun

A few weeks ago at work one of my coworkers told me a great story. She said that when she was young, like 7 or 8 years old, her older brother told her that if she smiled at the sun as she was walking to school she would have a good day. She said it wasn't until she was in high school that she realized her brother was just telling her that so she would look like a dork on her way to school. But she said she did notice a difference in the quality of her day when she would smile walking to school that morning. My coworker said that she still tries to smile at the sun on her drives to work and it helps her to have a good day.

I thought about this story for several days then realized, duh?! If I smiled for 15 minutes straight on my way to work I'm sure I would have a great day too. I tried this for several days and guess what? It worked! Now I'm not saying that before I tried this I always had a bad day, because that definitely isn't true. I am a naturally happy person and why shouldn't I be? I have a wonderful husband who is always such a sweetheart, a little baby moving around in my tummy, a comfortable apartment, and a great job! But I noticed that smiling on my drive makes me think of all those wonderful things in my life that make me happy. It's a natural chain reaction. Smiling makes me think that I am already happy, which then makes me think of the things that do make me happy, then I am happy! Yes, I may look like a dork to other drivers on the road, but having a great day is worth the momentary dorkiness.

Although almost every day is a good one, when I smile at the sun (or at least in the direction the sun should be) on my 15 minutes drive to work, I am unstoppable. My days go so well and I am in a positive mood. It's amazing what a few smiles can do! So for anyone reading this who needs a little hop in their step next week, try this technique: SMILE AT THE SUN!!!  I promise...it will smile right back at you.
